A short history
The NBA G League’s About page says the league is the NBA’s official minor league, and that it started as the NBA Development League beginning with the 2001–02 season.
The same page says that for the 2017–18 season the NBA Development League was renamed the NBA G League as part of a partnership with Gatorade, and that this was the first time a U.S. professional sports league was named an entitlement partner.
The 2026–27 schedule release calls that year the league’s 26th season.

Playoffs
After the regular season, the same release says the top eight clubs in each conference qualify for the NBA G League Playoffs presented by Google. Those playoffs end with the NBA G League Finals in April 2027.
NBA.com’s 2026–27 key dates list the G League regular season ending March 27 and the 2027 playoffs beginning March 30.
NBA G League Finals
The 2026–27 schedule release says each club plays 14 games in the Tip-Off Tournament, then a 36-game regular season after records reset. All 31 clubs play at least 50 games.
The Tip-Off Tournament begins Friday, November 6, 2026, and ends when a champion is crowned at the Winter Showcase in December. Four regional winners, plus the next four clubs by winning percentage, play for that Showcase title.

The About page names 30 NBA affiliates for 2026–27. The league’s Tip-Off Tournament regions page also lists the Mexico City Capitanes, the club that brings the published field to 31.
